PlanetLab是用于开发下一代互联网技术的开放式全球性测试平台，最初的核心体系架构由普林斯顿大学、华盛顿大学、加州大学和英特尔的研究人员共同开发，在全球部署了115个节点，随后惠普加入了该计划，今年1月Google和PlanetLab合作发布网络中立测量工具。

目前PlanetLab拥有1006个节点，分布在475个地址。中国教育和科研计算机网(CERNET)是在2004年12月加入PlanetLab，CERNET的节点由英特尔和惠普捐赠，首批加入的中国院校有清华、北大、北京航空航天等25所大学，建立了50个节点。2009年6月1日，PlanetLab重新考虑了CERNET地位，指出PlanetLab接受的成员是研究机构/大学，而不是“国家组织”如CERNET，要求所有CERNET地址的中国大学重新申请为独立成员。"

Dear PlanetLab Users and PI's,

You are receiving this message as a member of a PlanetLab CERNET  
site. This is to inform you that all CERNET sites, users, slices, and  
nodes have been removed from PlanetLab.  If you feel your site should  
not have been removed, we invite your university to re-enroll as a  
new PlanetLab member, separate from CERNET.  Note that membership is  
free.  This is consistent to the practice by other universities in  
the rest of the world where each PlanetLab site is associated to an  
institution/university, rather than to a "national organization" such  
as CERNET.  The application process is described here: http://
www.planet-lab.org/joining
